College Football Rule Changes I’d Like to See

Posted in NCAA College Football 2012 on 01.01.12 by Merlyn

Age limit of 25 on players who have played pro baseball. Honestly, I don’t think these guys should be eligible at all. Oklahoma State starting QB Brandon Weeden in 28 years old. He is older than Green Bay Packers NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers who has already played 7 seasons in the NFL. Basically, OSU is playing with an NFL quarterback. Chris Weinke was also 28 when he led Florida State to an undefeated season and a National Championship. 19 year olds should not have to compete with guys that old.
Seven wins to qualify bowl eligibility. There used to be a time when eight wins was not enough to get a team into a bowl. UCLA was allowed to play in something called the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl with a 6-7 record (they lost). This is football. Bowls should be a privilege of the elite, not an everybody-wins-an-award thing.
All Bowls must be completed by January 2 If January 2 falls on a Sunday, the final games may be played on January 3 so not to conflict with the NFL.
All BCS leagues MUST hold a conference championship game. But must have at least 8 teams.
Elimination of five bowl games. I propose the big losers below:

Bowl Location Attendance Capacity % Capacity Comments
Famous Idaho Potato Boise, Idaho 28,076 33,500 83.81% Boise State created this bowl for themselves; Nobody else want to be in Idaho in December.
New Mexico Albuqurque, N.M. 25,762 39,224 65.68% Same as above.
New Orleans New Orleans, La. 42,841 76,468 56.02% New Orleans had THREE bowl games 2011-12. They should call it the Superfluous Bowl.
Beef O’Brady’s St. Petersburg, Fla. 20,072 40,000 50.18% Only 20,000? There are more than that in the hot dog line at the BCS game.
Poinsettia San Diego, Calif. 24,607 70,561 34.87% < % Capacity column says it all. 35% of tickets sold. They already have the Holiday Bowl.

*If there are not enough teams, 6-6 teams can file for a waiver.

Bridesmaids 2011: The Envelope, Please!

Posted in NCAA College Football 2011 on 15.12.11 by Merlyn

(From left to right: Miami, WKU, Ball State)

When it came down to the end, there were 72 bowl eligible schools for 70 spots. AND THE LOSERS ARE: WESTERN KENTUCKY and BALL STATE!

WKU who finished 7-5 and 7-1 in the Sun Belt was denied a bowl-game invitation despite winning six of their last seven games (the loss was to #1 LSU).

Ball State was 6-6. There was not much chance they would beat out BCS teams with similar records.

Miami (Fla.) finished 6-6 but are sitting out of the bowl season as a self-imposed post-season ban due to the impending hammer that will be coming down from the NCAA.

Numerology: Florida State with Repeat Scores in a Pair of Back-to-Back Games

Posted in NCAA College Football 2011 on 17.11.11 by Merlyn

In Las Vegas, you can bet on almost anything: points scored, who wins the coin flip, halftime score, number of first downs…
I wonder what the odds would be that the Florida State Seminoles would have identical final scores in back-to-back games, not once but twice:

Sat, Sept 24    @ Clemson    L 35-30
Sat, Oct 8    @ Wake Forest    L 35-30
Sat, Oct 15    @ Duke              W 41-16
Sat, Oct 22    vs Maryland    W 41-16

2011 NCAA College Football Elimination – Week 8

Posted in NCAA College Football 2011 on 18.10.11 by Merlyn

Any team with 3 or more losses is long gone. New to this group are Florida & Tennessee.

It is not out of the question that a 2 loss team can win a National Championship (LSU in 2007) but it is farfetched. Auburn, Texas, Texas Tech, Arizona State, Baylor, Iowa

School W L Status
Alabama 7 0 Strong; Elimination game Nov. 5 (LSU)
LSU 7 0 Strong; Elimination game Nov. 5 (Bama)
Oklahoma 6 0 Strong; Elimination game Dec. 3 (Okl St)
Okl State 6 0 Strong; Elimination game Dec. 3 (Okl); @Texas Oct 15
Wisconsin 6 0 Mediocre schedule, might need some help
Stanford 6 0 Mediocre schedule, might need some help
Clemson 7 0 Surprise team; Tough games: UNC (Oct. 22) at Ga Tech (Oct. 29)
Boise State 6 0 Weak schedule hurts them
Kansas State 6 0 It’s only a matter of time.
Oregon 5 1 Will have to run the table and get some help
Virginia Tech 6 1 Will have to run the table and get some help
Arkansas 5 1 Will have to run the table and get A LOT of help
Nebraska 5 1 Will have to run the table and get A LOT of help
Michigan State 5 1 Will have to run the table and get A LOT of help
South Carolina 6 1 Lattimore is done and so are the Gamecocks
Penn State 6 1 It’s only a matter of time.
Rutgers 5 1 It’s only a matter of time.
Michigan 5 1 Will have to run the table and get A LOT of help
Southern Cal 5 1 It’s only a matter of time.
Illinois 6 1 Will have to run the table and get A LOT of help
Georgia Tech 5 1 Losing to a weak Maryland team probably kills their chances
Houston 6 0 Eliminated; Sorry, it ain’t gonna happen
Auburn 5 2 Eliminated
Texas 4 2 Eliminated
Texas Tech 4 2 Eliminated
Arizona State 5 2 Eliminated

2011 SEC Wrap-Up, Week 7

Posted in NCAA College Football 2011 on 17.10.11 by Merlyn

Alabama: Looking good. Real good.

Auburn: Ugly.

Florida: They still have yet to recover from the thrashing the Tide gave them in 2009 (and 2010 and 2011), made Tebow cry and made Urban have a nervous breakdown.

Georgia: Look at their record and they are not bad. Watch them play a game and they do look bad.

LSU: If I am coaching this team, Jordan Jefferson only plays in garbage time or in case of a Lee injury.

Ole Miss: Do ya’ll remember how excited the Ole Miss fans were when they hired Nutt? He has set the program back another 10 years.

Mississippi State: I am convinced that nobody can win big here. The state doesn’t have the recruits and what you do have you split with Ole Miss. It has to be impossible to convince someone from out of the area to come to Starkville. Mullen should start job hunting.

South Carolina: Spurrier is getting a big helping of karma. Connor Shaw has a big game and he dumps Stephen Garcia. Now it looks like Shaw is just as bad. Additionally, he does not develop any other running backs and now it’s trial by fire.

Tennessee: Vols fans are getting impatient? Already? They need to realize that is going to take some time to undo the mess that Fat Boy and Lame Kitten left in their wakes.

Vanderbilt: It must be sad to think this is what they consider good.

* Arkansas & Kentucky did not play.

2011: A Three Horse Race

Posted in NCAA College Football 2010 on 06.09.11 by Merlyn

As Auburn proved, a team can come out of nowhere and win the National Championship.

The way I see it, 2011 is a three horse race between Alabama, LSU and Oklahoma. It will become a two horse race after November 5th when LSU travels to Tuscaloosa. I expect the winner of that game to go onto New Orleans and beat the Sooners.

The rest:
Boise – Schedule is too weak. The only way they get in the big game is if all the big boys have 2 or more losses.
Stanford – I know everyone is in love with Andrew Luck, but his head coach is gone and historically hyped players have a less than stellar follow-up season: Mark Ingram, Tim Tebow, Jake Locker, etc.
Florida State – With a weak ACC, the Seminoles could sneak in there if they beat Oklahoma.
Oregon – After losing bad to LSU, it’s going to be tough to get back in the mix.
Arkansas – if they can go undefeated (Alabama, LSU, Texas A&M, Auburn. MSU, S Carolina) they deserve the BCS birth.
Wisconsin – The Badgers could sneak in the back door behind NC State transfer QB Russell Wilson but they will have to go through Nebraska and back-to-back road games versus Michigan State and Ohio State. Then there is the inaugural Big Ten Championship Game.
Nebraska – The Cornhuskers basically the same story as Wisconsin but have OSU & MSU at home. October 10th in Madison, WI will be huge.
