Three Classic Football Rivalries We Won’t See in 2012

Posted in NCAA College Football 2012 on 26.08.12 by Merlyn

John Brown

With the Missouri Tigers and Texas A&M Aggies leaving the Big 12 for the SEC and the West Virginia Mountaineers from the Big East to the Big 12, college football is losing a few annual games that date back to the late 19th century. Of course these teams had many rivalries within their old conferences but these are the highlights:

1. Border War (Kansas vs. Missouri) – Believe it or not, these two neighboring states still harbor some ill will between the two that dates back to the American Civil War. The schools’ mascots Jayhawks and Tigers were both derived from the Civil War but that story is another blog. The first meeting was in 1891 with Kansas coming out victorious 22-10. The series was the second-most-played rivalry in major-college football history behind Minnesota-Wisconsin (yawn). Mizzou leads the series 57-54-9.
2. Lone Star Showdown (Texas Longhorns vs. Texas A&M) Beginning in 1894, the state of Texas’ two oldest public universities have had a long history of good old-fashion hate. From 1910 to 1940 there was only one instance of a team winning the rivalry game in consecutive seasons. Texas holds an overall 76-37-5 lead with many wins coming from 1940 to 1974 when A&M only won thrice and one tie. Legendary coach Darrell Royal was at the helm for most of those wins. Since then it has been pretty even. Each team had won three of the last six meetings.
3. Backyard Brawl (Pitt Panthers vs. West Virginia Mountaineers) This game is so named because of the proximity of the two campuses. The two cities of Pittsburgh and Morgantown are linked by I-79 with around 75 miles between them. They have played 104 times since 1895 with Pitt hanging on to a 60-41-3 lead but WVU has won the last three meetings.

Nebraska Signs One In-State Recruit to Class of 2012

Posted in College Football Recruiting 2012, NCAA College Football 2012 on 09.02.12 by Merlyn

Sam Cotton

It’s interesting that Nebraska has to look to the far reaches of the country to pull in the Class of 2012.

Mohammed Seisayis well-traveled. Originally from West Springfield, VA, he spent a year at Fork Union Football Factory before playing for Memphis in 2010 – garnishing C-USA All-Freshman Team. Next he was off to Eastern Arizona Junior College in lovely Thatcher, Arizona. Now he lands in Lincoln.

Zaire Anderson played juco ball in Riverside, CA. He is originally from Philadelphia, PA.

Two players, Thomas Brown and Corey Whitaker, will have to travel 1500 miles from the Los Angeles area to play for the Huskers. Bo Pellini also got a rare pick out of the deep south snaring Imani Cross from the Atlanta, GA area (about 1000 miles).

Other states represented: Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Ohio, Louisiana, Missouri, Utah and a pair from Texas.

College Football Rule Changes I’d Like to See

Posted in NCAA College Football 2012 on 01.01.12 by Merlyn

Age limit of 25 on players who have played pro baseball. Honestly, I don’t think these guys should be eligible at all. Oklahoma State starting QB Brandon Weeden in 28 years old. He is older than Green Bay Packers NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers who has already played 7 seasons in the NFL. Basically, OSU is playing with an NFL quarterback. Chris Weinke was also 28 when he led Florida State to an undefeated season and a National Championship. 19 year olds should not have to compete with guys that old.
Seven wins to qualify bowl eligibility. There used to be a time when eight wins was not enough to get a team into a bowl. UCLA was allowed to play in something called the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl with a 6-7 record (they lost). This is football. Bowls should be a privilege of the elite, not an everybody-wins-an-award thing.
All Bowls must be completed by January 2 If January 2 falls on a Sunday, the final games may be played on January 3 so not to conflict with the NFL.
All BCS leagues MUST hold a conference championship game. But must have at least 8 teams.
Elimination of five bowl games. I propose the big losers below:

Bowl Location Attendance Capacity % Capacity Comments
Famous Idaho Potato Boise, Idaho 28,076 33,500 83.81% Boise State created this bowl for themselves; Nobody else want to be in Idaho in December.
New Mexico Albuqurque, N.M. 25,762 39,224 65.68% Same as above.
New Orleans New Orleans, La. 42,841 76,468 56.02% New Orleans had THREE bowl games 2011-12. They should call it the Superfluous Bowl.
Beef O’Brady’s St. Petersburg, Fla. 20,072 40,000 50.18% Only 20,000? There are more than that in the hot dog line at the BCS game.
Poinsettia San Diego, Calif. 24,607 70,561 34.87% < % Capacity column says it all. 35% of tickets sold. They already have the Holiday Bowl.

*If there are not enough teams, 6-6 teams can file for a waiver.

2012 SEC Schedule – so far!

Posted in NCAA College Football 2012 on 23.12.11 by Merlyn

Originally, the SEC said the 2012 SEC schedule would come out before Christmas. Now they are saying this week. We’ll see.

One Texas A&M blogger reports that their schedule will be:

Home Away
• Mississippi State
• Arkansas
• Florida
• LSU
• Auburn
• Alabama
• Missouri
• Ole Miss

There are a few games that are written in ink. The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party will take place in Jacksonville on October 27, 2012. November 24, 2012, the last Saturday of the regular season, is still preserved for the Iron Bowl and Egg Bowl as well as Arkansas-LSU playing the day before (Nov 23). Additionally, some sources claim that Florida at Texas A&M is a lock for September 8, 2012. Many sources believe that the 2012 Alabama-UGA game is off in favor of Mizzou playing Bama.

Here in grid form is the 2012 schedule for all SEC teams SO FAR:

2012 Sept 1 Sept 8 Sept 15 Sept 22 Sept 29 Oct 6 Oct 13 Oct 20 Oct 27 Nov 3 Nov 10 Nov 17 Nov 24
